Cheltenham Spa is a town in South-West England, which is regularly labelled the 'Capital or Centre of The Cotswolds'. On the western edge of The Cotswolds, Cheltenham has a population of around 120,000 people, and along with Gloucester is one of the most important towns in the region.
Famed for being a wealthy and well-educated location, Cheltenham is a regency town with some of the finest regency architecture in the country. Originally the town thrived around the spring waters and there is a beautiful reminder of this with the Pitville Pump Room, still used today to extract spawater. Cheltenham is also well-known for its excellent array of shops and boutiques, especially in the Montpellier area of the town, and for having won the Britain In Bloom contest on several occasions, in recognition of its plentiful gardens, trees and parks.
There are also many festivals celebrated in the town, including the Jazz and Literature festivals, and the famous NationalHuntFestival which brings hundreds of thousands of horse enthusiasts to the town in March. This festival is certainly worth experiencing, even if horse-racing isnt your thing, simply for the excitement, noise and emotion of the occasion!
